Gender Role in Triffles Essay The roles and rights of women in the Victorian era up to nineteen hundreds differ drastically from where women stand today. In the play â€Å"Trifles† by Susan Glaspell, females are portrayed to be an insignificant part of society compared to the importance of males. Susan Glaspell’s play Trifles is a murder mystery type of play that discovers and analyzes gender roles and corrupt relationships due to the Victorian time period. The typical stereo type for women in the nineteen hundreds was being nothing but a housewife. A good house wife in this time was considered to have children, take care of the children and clean the house, and there not much more to it. In the nineteen hundreds women did not have many career options, they had almost none. Women’s education was not seen as an important thing to promote. Stated by Helen Nickson in the article Life of Women in the Victorian Era, â€Å"The only role of women in the Victorian era was to get married and look after the homely chores The ladies did not do things themselves but told others what to do. They were just supposed to marry and raise children. The women of lower class worked in the factories, garment industries, laundries or various other jobs to support themselves.†. Women were treated more like an object or a servant rather than a person or spouse. One of the main characters in the play Trifles named Hale states a short simple statement that when looked into, states a strong opinion. Hale states to another male in the play, â€Å"Well, women are used to worrying over trifles.†. This statement shows how the men in this day thought women lacked common sense or intelligence. When trying to investigate the murder in this story, the men took no part of the women’s opinions. Women’s rights have come a long way since the Victorian Era. Women had little say in just about everything whether it had to do with marriage decisions or political things. Set up marriages were a common thing women had no say in. In today’s world women can vote, support themselves and choose who they marry. Some people wouldn’t believe the simple rights women have today were fought for way back when even in the nineteen hundreds. Women had little almost no career options in the Victorian Era. The few career choices were only for single women who needed to support themselves, if one was a house wife that was there life. Men had high expectations of their own wife’s classiness and manners in public places in the nineteen hundreds. Many males were very judgmental, much in like the play Trifles, of any opinion from a women back in the day. In an online article by Rachael Hurvitz, she states â€Å"For Victorians, divorce was not only extremely expensive, it was very hard to do. Women and men stayed in unhappy marriages for numerous reasons. Many stayed away from divorce because of the stigma attached to divorced women. It was also considered a societal taboo†. Women feared divorcing the one they were married to strictly due to the opinions of others in society. In Trifles a woman ends up murdering her own husband, rather than divorcing. The investigators don’t suspect her at first strictly because she is a wife and a female. When another female suggests that the husbands wife could be a possibility, the men just laughed to each another. Before women had fought for their rights, they lacked respect from society. Women have come a long way today, now having equal rights to anything men can do, including career choices and political voting. How the 13 Colonies Were Named   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The first thirteen colonies were either named after people, Indian names or, places in England. The original states/colonies are, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, South Carolina, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Hampshire and New Jersey.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The three states that are named specifically after Indian names are Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. The Puritans named Massachusetts, after a local Indian tribe whose name means â€Å"a large hill place.† Rhode Island was named after the Indian name for â€Å"Red Island.† It was officially called â€Å"The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations† in 1790. The third state named after and Indian name is Connecticut, which gets its name from and Algonquin word meaning â€Å"land on the long tidal river†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The eight colonies that are named after people in England are Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia and New York. Georgia was named in honor of England’s King George II. North and South Carolina were both named in honor of King Charles I. (Carolous is Latin for Charles). It is believed that Lord Baltimore who received a charter for what is now the land of Maryland, named the state after Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of King Charles I. Delaware was named by the Delaware Indians (also known as lenni-lenape) after the person Lord de la Warr. The â€Å"Keystone State,† more commonly known as Pennsylvania was named by William Penn in honor of his father. William combined the name Penn and Latin term Sylvania, which means â€Å"woodlands† to come up with â€Å"Penn’s Woodlands.

Fate vs. Free Will: Re-examining the Belief through Sophocles’ Oedipus the King Essay

Fate has always been the central argument in almost every Greek drama known to human civilization. Mankind has always been convinced that we cannot go against the tide, as all things are bound to happen, waiting to happen, and will happen. We have always been a believer of oracles, the fanfare of fortune-tellers, we hold our breaths to what the cards will tell of our fortune and our future. But if this is to be believed, then we are unwittingly giving up our free will, our right and capability to make decisions, we are giving away our logic and our right to draw our own lives, but rather, giving it all up to a greater force, an invisible hand that commands us to do what we ought to do. In the interest of discussion and deep philosophical reckoning, may I ask, is life, as unpredictable as it is, drawn by fate or by free will? Oedipus the King, one of the three Theban plays written by Sophocles, has been the center of many discussions on this topic. The question of whether fate or free will contributed to the downfall of Oedipus poses a great many questions to scholars and common folks alike. The question is an unwitting examination of our own lives, are we the products of the choices we take, or victims and collateral damages to a greater, unfolding plan. Fate, has been defined as the will or principle or determining cause by which things in general are believed to come to be as they are or events to happen as they do (Webster 128). By essence, we as common folks cannot choose our own undertaking but rather, just follow whatever it is that is bound to happen. Oedipus life has been marred by the predictions and indications of the Delphian Oracle. He, together with Laius and Jocasta, gave tremendous weight to what fate has instructed them to portray. And in their efforts to change what has been written, they have fallen victims to their own destiny, entangled with the cobwebs of lies and deceit that they made to cover up what their own personal flaws and fears. It is interesting to know and to reckon, however, that the oracle says the son will kill his father and mate with his mother, what if the child that was delivered was a daughter and not a son? Or it would have been a quick and quiet solution if Jocasta or Laius himself killed the baby and not just delegate it to a servant, thus avoiding the case of insubordination, which proved deadly for all the characters involved. Or, they could have just raised Oedipus by themselves, in their own guidance, within their very reach, for no moral man shall kill his own father and have a relationship with his own mother. In shorter terms, there could have been many alternatives, many ways, many options, which could have been effective and could have prevented the tragedy that has befallen the House of Laius. Free will could have worked things out in this tangled story of murder and incest. Logic could have outwitted the fates that are conveniently believed to direct our destinies. But then, some may think, this is still a gamble on the things to come. Again, let me cite another story, this time in the form of a short story by Mark Twain, aptly entitled Luck. It has clearly illustrated how a man who lacks luster in any field, became an illustrious and decorated military officer. He has been pursued, day by day and year by year, by a most phenomenal and astonishing luckiness (Twain 64). This fictional character, Lieutenant General Lord Arthur Scoresby, seems to have all the luck in the world, transforming the worst of blunders into the most brilliant and astonishing of all the military tactics. To romantics, it seems that the universe has conspired to give him the best of fortunes and enjoy the best of life. But again, let me ask, for purposes of reckoning and discussion, what if poor Scoresby â€Å"choose† other field and not enter the world of military, where outwitting and counter outwitting the enemy is a practice? Or, what if the reverend, instead of helping him, just let him fail his subjects I the military school? A choice has been given to the reverend, but alas, he choose to undertake the road that led to the unthinkable and unlikely success of the stupid man. His own choice, then, it is safe to say, has catapulted the General to his place in history. Force, or the lack of it, is an underlying factor in this topic. Oedipus has always known he will one day kill a man that is father, therefore, he should have prevented himself to kill any man, be it a stranger or the man he has believed all along to be his father, King Polybus. Nobody forced him to kill anyone, or at least, no other hand guided the sword that killed Laius but his own. He has been warned that he will one day commit and incestuous relationship with his own mother, then, he should have prevented himself from marrying any woman, be it any woman or the woman he has believed all along to be his mother, Merope. He, therefore, has guided his own undoing. Oedipus, therefore, is the only one responsible for fulfilling the prophecy, for in no page of the play did I find that any other hand or force guided him to do as he did, but his own choice, his own free will. The knowledge of the murder and the incest should have warned him and equipped him with a list of what not to do in his life, but instead, he let his own flaws draw his destiny. The question of fate and free will is an age old problem, and the solution will not be found in the endless debates, lustrous academic and para-academic discussions, or literary discourses. Our lives, whether we believe it or not, are products of our choices, we are of our own doing, or undoing. If we allow ourselves to believe that, like the planets in the universe, lifeless and dull, we are drawn to follow a certain order, then, we practically give up our right to life, our freedom, our individuality, but instead, we accept that we are common, unspecial, and nothing more than a dry leaf mercilessly thrown around by the wind, we are nothing but a stone that will forever remain at the bottom of the sea, or up in the mountains, that we are at the mercy of someone we don’t see. Lastly, let me just share, not a quote or a passage, but a law that has been proven time and time again, authored by the great Sir Isaac Newton. Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it. On the first day of Latin American Cultures, Professor Navia asked, â€Å"What does all of Latin America have in common?† In response, the students had a combination of answers: language, geography, and culture. However, everyone overlooked the most obvious answer: inequality. Inequality comes in all shapes and forms, and the most commonly thought of inequality is the gap between the rich and poor (income distribution). In this case, the primary inequality that will be addressed is human rights. According to the UNDP’s Development Report for Latin America and the Caribbean, Latin America is one of the world’s most unequal regions. Within Latin America, however, Honduras is the second poorest country that does not only face financial issues, but also large amounts of human rights violations toward majority of the population. By discussing the different types of violations in the 21st century, its reasons behind these particular violations shed light on how to addr ess these issues. Lack of education and money seem to highlight a method of improving the current standing of Honduras. In order to discuss the violation of human rights in Honduras, it is important to address what exactly are the human rights for the purpose of this paper. While OHCHR states that human rights are â€Å"rights inherent to all human beings,† this definition is too broad to narrow down. There are huge differences in funding and structure of the healthcare organizations. Person centered approach has been obsolete within U.S while U.K seeks to provide person centered approach to the patients. On the other hand Barten et al. (2009) stated that, healthcare system of United States is often been unfair while NHS (National Healthcare System) of United Kingdom provide availability of work to the people who are needy. Therefore, detail comparisons have been discussed in this report. Funding of healthcare system: According to Curtis et al. (2010), healthcare of United States are insurance based. However, the system of healthcare within United Kingdom is run by the British Government from the very beginning of its journey. The healthcare system of United Kingdom is socialized system of healthcare. National Health System is opened for all people within the society. Healthcare system of United Kingdom has spent more money to the healthcare system of this country. Improved technology is required for the healthcare system of United Kingdom. Todays world has become more challenging as the technology has been acquired a great place. Therefore, this country should decrease various traditional method and increase modern technology while delivering improved healthcare system. Presence of NHS: National Healthcare System of United Kingdom has maintained ethical practices within the society. Many local authorities have been regulated by the National Healthcare System of U.K. The healthcare system of United States can be called as unfair system. People who attend the healthcare from any organization have to pay for the service. While dealing with a minor issue, the people have to pay for all types of treatments within United States. Some people may have some financial problems but the government of United States does not consider the poor financial problems of people (Civitas.org.uk, 2015). On the other hand, as per the regulations of Care Quality Commission of United Kingdom, health inequalities are the subject to reform. Department of Public Health of U.K always tries to protect the health as well as wellbeing of the people of the country. Local bodies of the health department of U.K seek to provide support for the people within the region. NHS provides the chance of partnership for different local organizations of healthcare. Therefore, many palliative care teams also work for the people through partnering with the National Health System of United Kingdom. The Government of United Kingdom has spent a lot of money on the protective medicine. Health department of U.K Government has tried to keep the whole population healthy. Effort of the Health and Wellbeing department of U.K Government has been tried to establish many Health and Wellbeing Board into the local authorities of Government. Healthcare system of United Kingdom is socialized. The aim of this healthcare syst em is open to all people of different levels (Gov.uk, 2015). However, within these days, bureaucracy, lack of improved as well as advanced technology has affected the healthcare system of United Kingdom. Therefore, United Kingdom has taken many initiatives for providing help to the affected people of different regions. National Health System of United Kingdom partners with many healthcare organizations of the world and provides help to the needy people of different regions. For example, to combat with Ebola, NHS has made brilliant effort to help those Ebola affected people of several regions of West Africa. NHS has sent healthcare professionals for serving those affected people. NHS has also sent palliative care team for helping those needy people of that region (Nhs.uk, 2015). United States send fund and military for various regions in order to protect the chronic as well as various types of infectious diseases. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of United States and other healthcare agencies of United States have worked with joint partnership of W.HO (World Health Organization) to prevent Ebola within West Africa. CDC has worked with various agencies for safely managing the healthcare staffs of their region. This organization has posted various types of Ebola related message to the travelers of West Africa. Staffs of CDC have delivered healthcare staffs, logistics, analytics, communication materials, support functions and management staffs to the affected place (Amsa.org, 2015). In comparison with U.S and U.K healthcare system, presence of advanced technology has helped to improve the healthcare system of United States while United Kingdom has to put more emphasis on the technological innovation within the healthcare system of United States. Privatized vs. Socialized healthcare: As stated by Foster (2010), privatized healthcare can be more effective for the purpose of health. However, healthcare system of United States has both the private and government interests. On the other hand, healthcare system of United Kingdom only has the funding of government. King of United Kingdom provides fund to various types of healthcare systems of United Kingdom. National Health System is one of the most important examples of effective healthcare. Socialized healthcare often leads to the bureaucratic nature of the society. Bureaucracy stops to raise funds for the services of medical purposes. Huge amount of money has not been given to the management level of healthcare system. Sometime people feel that they cannot acquire healthcare as per their requirements. The Government has forced to gather experience of the healthcare system. Conclusion: Favorable condition of U.S healthcare system is the presence of innovative technology, choice of different health provider etc. People dont have to wait for the service provider of health. Healthcare system of United States is hugely expensive. It can be very difficult for poor people to use the healthcare system of United States. In comparison to the American Healthcare system, British healthcare system is less expensive than America. Presence of NHS has maintained an ethical practice within this system. However, Healthcare system of U.K is lacking from advanced technology and bureaucratic system has affected the health scenario of United Kingdom.
